Major Anthony J. Purvis distinguished himself with Major Anthony J. Purvis distinguished himself with exceptionally meritorious service as a CJ5 planner at the Combined Security Transition Command - Afghanistan (CSTC-A) in support of OPERATION FREEDOM’S SENTINEL from 10 August 2020 to 31 March 2021. Throughout the deployment, Major Purvis planned, coordinated, and facilitated actions in a heavily multinational setting, well outside the scope of his occupational specialty, that had tremendous impact on the coalition’s ability to support the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. Major Purvis’ conduct is not only a testament for the potential of coalition aligned operations but stands as a proud reminder of the infantryman’s ability to adapt exceptionally to the unknown. #Infantry #OSM #orderofstmaurice

This portrait is Calculator "Calc" the Post dog during the early 20s.
Calc would hitch rides into nearby Columbus with any military vehicle that passed. He is said to have enjoyed jumping on the post's narrow gauge railway that transported troops to and from the rifle ranges. Calculator would mooch a free meal from anyone; rank made no difference. He was especially fond of parades and always slept in the barracks with the enlisted men.

This Drum allegedly was used during Sherman’s march to the Sea, but under further investigation, the contract date is nine days after the fall of Savannah, which was 20 December 1864. It may be possible the drum was sent to Savannah with other supplies to re-equip the army before their march to the Carolina’s. #Infantry #followme #NIM #nationalinfantrymuseum #inthevault

While Kasserine Pass was not an American victory, While Kasserine Pass was not an American victory, it did hold deep significance for the future. The Americans seriously contemplated where their efforts had failed and boldly initiated changes to improve their battlefield performance. Emphasis on air superiority, proper cover in the desert landscape, and positioning of units so that they could effectively work together and cover each other in a unified manner was stressed. Finally, General Dwight D. Eisenhower took control of the command structure. He created the 18th Army Group under General Harold Alexander (UK) as the new Allied headquarters in North Africa, and placed an invigorating leader, Major General George S. Patton, in charge of the US II Corps. The American reaction to Kasserine Pass showed the American Army’s determination that next time the Germans would experience very different results.

On this day in 1970: Staff Sgt. Franklin D. Miller On this day in 1970: Staff Sgt. Franklin D. Miller was leading a long range patrol of Special Forces soldiers and Montagnards in Laos when a booby trap wounded several members. A firefight ensued, wounding the entire patrol. Despite a serious chest wound, Miller is the last man standing and keeps up the fight for several hours, holding off repeated enemy assaults against their position. That evening, as he is about to exhaust his ammunition, a team arrives to relieve the Green Berets.
Miller would serve over six years in Southeast Asia. When asked by Richard Nixon upon awarding Miller the Medal of Honor, the president asks him where he wanted to be assigned next. Miller's answer: "Vietnam."
